Forecasting Your Food

What does the weather have to do with dinner?

A lot.

In fact, it has a huge impact on just about everything you eat. The weather affects not only the quality of crops, but also the quantity. And when quantity is impacted so are prices.

In January, a deep freeze in California’s heartland caused around $1 billion in losses to nearly every major crop.

To make up for it farmers passed the cost onto consumers. Grocery stores hiked the price of everything from oranges to avocadoes to artichokes. Even a smoothie cost more. Major national retailer Jamba Juice was forced to add a "Brrr charge". This meant an extra $.25 for some smoothies and juice blends and a $.35 increase for a cup of orange juice. According to the company’s website, the extra cost will disappear when “orange supplies are once again plentiful”.

But if there's one thing we know for sure it's that you can't control the weather.
